I discovered the star stitch as I was browsing for new stitches to learn. I instantly loved it! It works up quickly and its so much easier than it looks! I have been needing cover for my iPad for a while now but I wasn't sure how I wanted it to look. I knew right away this was the stitch I wanted to use. I had these yarn colors left over from some of my recent projects and I decided to use it up.
My original plan was to make it one solid color but I didn't have quite enough yarn of any of the colors to make the entire thing. So this is what I came up with. Now that I have finished I can't believe I ever wanted to make it one color. That would have been so boring ;) -I used Hobby Lobby's Yarn Bee Soft and Sleek in Light Grey, Dark Grey, and White -Size H Clover Amor Hook (My FAVORITE hooks! Buy them below from Amazon) Wood Button (found at Hobby Lobby) I learned the star stitch from this website HERE She has a wonderful tutorial for a star stitch clutch to get you started. Her instructions were clear and I had picked it up in just a couple of minutes. To get started you will need to chain enough chains to get the length of the device you want to cover, making sure it is an odd number. I have an iPad mini so I ended up chaining 31 chains. Then SC in the second chain from the hook and chain across until the end of the row. Normally here you would chain 1 and turn, BUT we want to work in rounds so we are actually going to work upside down and SC on the bottom of our chains we just made. Check out the photo below to see what I'm referring to.
When you get to the end of the row you will slip stitch with the first stitch you made. It should look like the photo below:
Now you will start your star stitches. Chain 3 to begin your star stitch. You will star stitch all the way around joining with your first star stitch at the end.
Continue your star stitches in dark grey for 6 rows. Working 6 rows of Dark Grey, 6 rows of Light Grey and 6 rows of White, changing colors at the slip stitch to the first star stitch.
You will have a space start to form at each join and the end of the round. This will show on the back side of your work. If it bothers you, you can whip stitch it together at the end. I left mine because I think it adds a little character.
After finishing with the white SC all the way around the top, join to the first stitch. Tie off and weave in the ends. I weaved in my ends of each of the color changes as I went to make it easier.
Chain 18 chains in white and attach to the back center of the cover. The button was sewed on using the white yarn, attaching it in the correct spot so the chain closure would fit around it. Its really that easy and looks wonderful! Happy Crocheting!

Hi. I watched the other tutorials you linked to but I still don’t understand how you’re supposed to do the second row of the star stitches. Which loops am I supposed to crochet into? Comments are closed.
